Bike Trip from California to Washington, D.C., 1978
I answered Carol’s ad for a cycling companion and we set out on a 60-day, 3,500-mile journey across the central part of the United States—Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. We saw it all: snowy mountain passes, bleak flat lands, lush farm country, hilly grasslands, really hilly Ozarks, old Appalachian Mountains. We landed at the Lincoln Memorial in time to see the 4th of July fireworks.
The map of our journey
Coming upon Mono Lake was a thrill
At 7,000 feet in the Sierras
We reach the top!
Monarch Pass at the Continental Divide
Entering Death Valley, headed for Furnace Creek
Four feet at Four Corners
Unconventional tire repair
In Pahrump Nevada we meet Herman Morgart, and have great biscuits at the Cotton Pickin' Cafe
Bleak Eastern Colorado
Last day in Moorfield, Virginia
British cyclists admire my unusual repair
A very little desert shade
Packing ten pounds of ice to cool a steamy Kentucky evening
We celebrate crossing the Continental Divide with Kahlua
On to Kingman and the Grand Canyon
Goodbye to the Rockies
Lancer's Rose and sardines in mustard sauce with rice cakes was a favorite dinner
